Roots & Wings

Roots and wings. Tends to sum up the job of parenting in just three words. At this point, I seem to have the roots part down pat. Teach your children values, morals, manners, etc. Basically, "How to Be a Good Citizen 101". It is the wings part I have the most difficulty with.

Point in case...Grace was invited to join a classmate at the Justin Bieber concert last night. At The Izod Center, no less. I could hardly imagine my oldest "baby" at such an event...thousands of screaming fans at an enormous arena. The noise, the lights, more screaming. Hesitantly, I accepted the invitation and nervously worried as the day of the concert approached.

Upon confiding to my super sister about my anxiety, she simply told me, "Just don't dress her like a librarian." (btw I didn't) I realized Grace was ready for this small leap ~ it was me who wasn't. As I dropped her off at her friend's home before the concert, I wanted to give Grace some words of wisdom. I was at a loss, so I blurted, "Don't forget to have good manners!" (true)

Fast forward....Grace had an AMAZING time!! She loved every moment of it and couldn't stop telling me about every song and screaming fan. As I listened, I was proud of her new wings. I am proud of my new wings too.
